The first game in Piranha's Gothic series falls somewhere between Dungeon Siege and Morrowind in scale and scope, but fails to achieve the heights of either. It's a third-person RPG/Action romp that features the requisite NPCs who dole out missions - kill this, take this there, find that - an inventory system, fights et al. The graphics aren't spectacular - Gothic was released in 2001, remember - everything is pretty blocky with dullish textures, particularlarly the characters. To its credit, Gothic does use lots of fairly well-acted voiceover (a rare commodity in RPGs), though the conversational topic trees tend to be sparse throughout. As a base for Gothic II and the upcoming Gothic III, the original provides a solid "look how far we've come" factor, but serious RPGers may want to skip directly to the sequels.

While not the best in graphics, the atmosphere and storyline are unmatched. the feeling of complete immersion...great game.

ReplyDeletesorry, but this game is an epic classic. One who didn't play this game does not know value of the RPG genre. Game is amazing, except graphics, but the gameplay is awesome, and if you don't play the first part, than second and third are uselles. Altough, game is not big as morrowind, but the quests, freedom, characters, action, world, all is perfect and I can guarantee you that you will not find any newer game that is good as Gothic I ( I'm talking about fantasy RPG). If you prefer gameplay over graphics, than this is perfect game, and definitly worth playing, a LOT
